The Nike Kobe 1, also known as the Zoom Kobe 1, was originally released in 2006 and was designed by Ken Link. Kobe Bryant made modern-day history when he scored 81 points in a single game while wearing the shoes.
Nike Kobe 1 History
After switching from Adidas to Nike, Nike launched Kobe Bryant’s first signature shoe, the Nike Zoom Kobe 1, in 2006. The shoes and Kobe’s signature clothing line went on sale nationwide on February 10th, 2006. The Air Zoom Huarache 2K4 and 2K5 were ultimately made especially for Kobe, but a black edition of the 2K5 was the first to feature Kobe’s own logo with Nike.
The design of the Kobe 1 was inspired by Bryant’s nickname, “Black Mamba,” drawing inspiration from the sleek and deadly qualities of the snake. The shoe featured a low-cut profile, a departure from traditional basketball sneakers at the time, which aimed to provide Bryant with greater agility and freedom of movement on the court.
One of the most notable features of the Kobe 1 was its use of Zoom Air cushioning technology, strategically placed in the forefoot and heel to provide responsive cushioning and impact protection. This innovative technology enhanced Bryant’s performance on the court, allowing him to confidently make quick cuts, explosive jumps, and precise movements.
Nike Kobe 1 Colorways
However, the Nike Kobe 1 was Kobe’s official shoe and was worn during the 2006 playoffs. Many colorways were inspired by team colors and the teams Kobe was involved with, including Los Angeles Lakers and USA Basketball. One of the most interesting things about this shoe is that it was featured in a collaboration with well-known Nike collaborator and graffiti artist Stash. Nike would release a retro version of the shoe in 2018 known as “Protro.” With a handful of original colors returning, we would also see collaborations with Undefeated.
